. Promoting positive behavior during the dental appointment of pediatric patients

Dr. AMJAD H. WYNE
Associate Professor in Pediatric Dentistry, Department of Preventive Dental Sciences, College of Dentistry, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Majority of children are well behaved and compliant dental patients. However, it is critical that these young patients are handled appropriately. The basic philosophy in pediatric dental practice is to guide children successfully through various stages of dental appointment. Critical stages such as a possible separation from parents, getting into dental chair, the injection, dental procedure, end of the appointment and return to parents are vital in promoting positive behavior. A dentist wishing to perform dentistry in children should possess an ability to guide these good children during the critical stages described above. The objective of the presentation is to describe various strategies that will take a dental practitioner successfully through these critical stages of a dental appointment while treating child patients.

. Immediate implant placement and soft tissue management after extraction of retained deciduous upper lateral incisors

Dr. MONTASER  AL- QUTUB
Assistant Professor in Periodontics, Department of Preventive Dental Sciences, College of Dentistry, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Background: A 45-year-old woman complained of mobility of retained deciduous upper lateral incisors bilaterally in place of congenital missing permanent teeth. Patient wanted the best esthetic outcome including the preservation of the soft tissue and fixed replacement on the same day of deciduous teeth extraction. Different treatment approaches were discussed and an immediate implant placement was chosen.
Methods: Evaluation of the gingival profile (dental papillae on either side of each tooth, gingival contour, free gingival margin level, and soft tissue thickness) and bone structure was done first. A Periotome (a cross between mini-elevator and a scalpel, used to severe the periodontal ligament) was used.  A minimal traumatic extraction technique was performed. Then, an immediate implant placement with the immediate loading by provisional crown was completed.  A clinical maintenance was kept, three months follow up was done and the final crowns will be completed six months later.
Results: Papillae, gingival tissue, bone structure, esthetic appearance were well maintained and in a stable state after three months.
Conclusion: Esthetic replacement of congenital missing teeth in place of retained deciduous lateral incisors can be achieved by proper evaluation, minimal traumatic extraction technique and immediate implant placement that will preserve the papillae and gingival tissue.

024. Updates in pharmacological control of dental pain: Clinical scenarios

Dr. AHMED M.A. AL-KAHTANI
Assistant Professor, Department of Restorative Dental Sciences, College of Dentistry, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Orofacial pain is one of the most common types of pain in nearly 21.8% of the population. Odontalgia occurs in nearly 12.3% of the population. Selecting drugs for pain control in dentistry should be based on scientific research rather than clinical impressions. The aim of this lecture based presentation is to provide the clinician with the latest evidence-based updates in pharmacologic control of dental pain.
